It has been a while since we published an article. There was some issue with our ISP Reliance which is now resolved. So as our first article we decided to answer one question that a lot of people have been asking us – What is the best graphics card for gaming ? These type of questions do not have any single answer. The best graphics card depends on how much money you can spend and how capable is rest of your system( CPU, RAM, etc.). To answer this question properly we have categorized graphics card under different price points. We have analysed several synthetic benchmarks and real game performance charts to categorize the cards. So you don’t have do any work. Just decide your budget and select a graphics card from respective. But before that here is short graphics card buying guide:

(i) Graphics card buying guide:

This guide will answer some basic questions. I recommend you to go through it. If you already know this then skip to the next section.

1. 1G or 2GB or 3G. How much memory is enough?

Today we see a lot of graphics card sporting 2GB, 3GB or even 6GB video memory. Even the low end graphics cards have 2GB models. Do you really need that much video memory? The answer is no for low and mid range cards. The resolution at which you play game is also an important factor. Unless you have very high resolution monitor having a resolution of 1920×1200 or more and a graphics card with a powerful GPU you will never be able to utilize that much ram . This was confirmed by Tom’s Hardware in this article.

Many people think that more memory means more speed. 1GB of graphics RAM is more than enough for mid range cards(sub cards). But for gaming at HD resolution (1920×1080 or more) 2GB or more might give better performance.

2.  DDR2, DDR3 or  DDR5 ?

DDR5 is newer, faster and more expensive than DDR3. DDR2 is obsolete. You should always try to buy DDR5 version of a graphics card.

3. Nvidia or ATI ?

Nvidia is definitely the bigger company. But both companies are equally good. When buying a card your focus should be on which is faster for given budget ran than to which brand to it belongs. Still if you prefer Nvidia or ATI there are plenty of graphics cards to chose from. We have found ATI to provide better overclocking utilities out of the box. On the other hand driver support for Linux is better in case of Nvidia.

4. Will xx graphics card be compatible with my PC ?

Your motherboard must have a PCI express card slot. PCIe 2.1/2.0 are backward compatible with PCIe 1.0/1.1 . Similarly PCIe 3.0 cards are compatible with  PCIe 2.0/2.1.

The other thing you should see is your power supply or SMPS. It should at least be 400W and from a good manufacturer. For higher end card at least 600w is required.

5. Where to buy?

Generally you can get a better deal online than brick and mortar store. Local store also do not have the variety. But it doesn’t hurt check your local store for prices before buying online. To most of our readers we suggest to buy from Amazon. Indian readers can get better deal on Flipkart. Flipkart also has COD option so you don’t need a credit card for purchase. Link to both these stores is given below each of the cards.

(ii) Best graphics card for gaming

The graphics cards are categorized under different price points. Decide your budget and pick the best graphics card for the money. First one under each category is the recommend one. The second one is at par or slightly slower and so on.  The prices are in USD. The prices in brackets are their equivalents in INR.

1. Best graphics card under 30$ (2,000 Rs.)

Frankly in this  price range you can hardly find a gaming card. These cards are mainly for HTPCs. But if you have a very old PC with an anaemic integrated graphics then these cards can breath some life in those systems. You should be able able to play old games like counter strike 1.6, Half Life 2, etc.  easily. Newer games will only run at lowest resolution and graphics settings. Graphics intensive games will be unplayable.

amzn-buy-btn   fkrt-buy-btn (1 GB)  fkrt-buy-btn (2 GB)

6. Best graphics card under 200$ (15,000 Rs.)

In this range the graphics cards will run all the latest games at high settings as well as at high resolutions.

GTX 650 Ti Boost DDR5 (Recommended)

6-gtx-650-ti-boostMake no mistake. This is not same card as listed in previous category. See the ‘ Ti Boost ‘ in the title. There are 3 variants of GTX 650.

GTX 650 < GTX 65 Ti < GTX 65 Ti  Boost (Best)

This card benefits from wider bus of 192-bit and faster memory clock of 6008 MHz. Also the number of CUDA cores is considrably higher.

7. Best graphics card under 300$ (20,000 Rs.)

The games will run all the games at ultra high settings as well as high resolutions. It is a tie between both the cards. You can’t go wrong if you buy either .

 1. Nvidia GTX 760 DDR5

7-gtx-760-ddr5With the extra wide 256-bit bus the the GPU has enough room to flex its muscles.

Specifications
GPU Clock: 993 MHz
Processors and Cores: 768
Memory Capacity: 2GB
Bus Width: 256-bit
Bus Standard: PCI Express 3.0
Directx/OpenGL: v11.1/4.3

amzn-buy-btn (2GB)    fkrt-buy-btn (2GB)

2. ATI Radeon 7950 DDR5

7-ati-7950-ddr5Very high bus width of 384-bit and 1792 shaders makes this graphics card very powerful. If you are buying this card we suggest  to buy Sapphire Vapor-X. Vapor-X is a proprietary cooling technology that uses a custom heatsink and liquid to cool the card. As a result the cards are cooler and quieter.

This card is slightly costly in Indian market with the cost of 24.6k INR . Although on Amazon it is easily available around .

Specifications
GPU Clock: 850 MHz
Processors and Cores: 1792
Memory Capacity: 3GB
Bus Width: 384-bit
Bus Standard: PCI Express 3.0
Directx/OpenGL: v11.1/4.2
Shader: version 5

amzn-buy-btn (3GB)    fkrt-buy-btn (3GB)

8. Best graphics card under 500$ (30,000 Rs.)

These are some of the fastest card on earth. With a good CPU these cards will shine. Don’t pair these with weak CPUs.  Also make sure you have a capable power supply(SMPS) as these cards are power hungry. These cards have enough power to support multi monitor setup: ATI eyefinity and Nvidia Surround. Once again both card listed below have comparable performance. So both are recommended.

1. GTX 770 DDR5

8-gtx-7770-ddr5

Specifications
GPU Clock: 1046 MHz
Processors and Cores: 1536
Memory Capacity: 2GB or 4GB
Bus Width: 256-bit
Bus Standard: PCI Express 3.0
Directx/OpenGL: v11.1/4.2
Shader: version 5

amzn-buy-btn (4GB)    fkrt-buy-btn (2GB)

2. ATI Radeon 7970 DDR5

8-ati-7970-ddr5

Specifications
GPU Clock: 925 MHz
Processors and Cores: 2028
Memory Capacity: 3GB or 6GB
Bus Width: 384-bit
Bus Standard: PCI Express 3.0
Directx/OpenGL: v11/4.2
Shader: version 5

amzn-buy-btn (6GB and 3GB)    fkrt-buy-btn (3GB)

    Hows
ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 650 2 GB AMP Edition? And whats the difference between
    ZOTAC NVIDIA 650TI 1GB DDR5 and ZOTAC NVIDIA 650 1 GB DDR5 ?

    • Yashraj VK

      go here hwcompare.com

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

There are so many versions it is bound to create confusion. Zotac GTX 650 Amp is the overclocked factory overclocked version of regular GTX 650 having a clock 1189 MHz instead of 1071 . So you should get at least 10% more performance. The GTX 650 Ti has more shaders so it is 40% faster than regular one. The GTX 650 Ti Boost has GPU boost which automatically maximizes clock speed when required. Something like Turbo boost in Intel Core processor. So we have the following order:
Regular GTX 650 < Amp edition < Ti < Ti boost

Out of the three versions you have mentioned I recommend GTX 650 Ti 1GB DDR5 as it is only slightly costlier but is 40% more powerful. Link: GTX 650 Ti 1 GB GDDR5

  • Vivek Upadhyay

well thats a helluva work Dude…specially ordering them according to their price.
    Its really good.

PS: I have Nvidia 8400GS[broke and borrowed but working very well now].And this post is really helpful in buying a new one. :)

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

Sapphire is a good choice for ATI. I’m using Sapphire Radeon HD 5670. It has served me well since last 3 years.

  • Abdi

Umm do you know if AMD RADEON HD 8970 is a good graphic card and would be good for assassin creed 4 black flag or call of duty or games which require heavy tasks

    • Amaan

It is more than enough. It will run on HIGHEST settings if the other components are decent enough.

  • James Borne

This is extremely useful thanks a lot!
And also it’s an awesome idea to sort by price.

  • Mahendra

This is really helpful & easy for people to take decision as per their buying capacity.

  • Kevin

I have a question is the ATI Radeon 7950 DDR5 still a good graphics card i’m seeing a lot of 2012 stuff so i’m hoping it’s not out of date cause’ it looks like a really good choice

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

ATI Radeon HD 7950 is a very capable card. The recent price drop makes it a very attractive option. My recommendation is to go for it.

      • Kevin

Can you send me a link for that graphics card for newegg? thx

        • Kevin

          WAIT ITS 500$ on AMAZON!

  • Prakash Kundu

i am really confused plz help…my budget is 25-30 k +2 k top ! i am looking for amd/ati really dont know wht to buy. confused between sapphire vapor-x 7950 n ati radeon 7950…plz do tell me which is the best card for me under this budget n also link me whr to buy from :) really need ur help ! feel free to suggest me any other card.

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

Your first choice Sapphire 7950 Vapor-X is a very good card. Vapor-X series is popular because of its superior cooling. I don’t understand which card you meant by ‘ati radeon 7950′. The Vapor-X edition is currently out off stock at Flipkart (Link). Your best option is Sapphire 7950 Boost edition which is slightly costlier but 5-10% faster due to higher clock speed(Link ). Let me know if you have any other doubt.

      • Prakash Kundu

vapor x series is not available right now n i’ve been surfing the net n went through many cards compared sapphire 7950 vapor x…everywhere people are saying that r9-280x is way more better than 7950 series…! should i go for 7950 or buy the r9-280 series?? n if r9-280x then which one asus ,msi or xfx? do link me whr to buy from…:)

        • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

R9-280x is about 10-15% faster than 7950. The price has fallen since I have written the article. Out of the three brands XFX is considered the best. Available at Flipkart at good price. Here is the link as requested.

  • AMan

I have an ATI RADEON 4000X HD 1Gb DDR2 card nd i want to upgrade my ram nd graphics card i have a 2gb DDR2 ram!!
    PLEASE SUGGESt!!

PS :- My BUDGEt IS 3000!!

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

Radeon HD 4000 is a series not a card. Please install Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy to find your graphics card.

  • TAp Ftg

Im using gt 620. What is the best graphic for me. Budjet $100.

    • http://www.techanger.com/ Aamir Rizwan

AMD Radeon HD 7770 is just over 100$ and a very good option. In the same range Nvidia’s GTX 650 is costlier and slower. Both these cards require 6 pin PCIe power connector. If your SMPS does not have one then HD 7750 is your best option which performs same as GTX 650.

  • Sanjeev Schweinsteiger

my budget is 30000/- what will be the best single perfomance graphics card provided the buying link..

  • Rick Sv

Hi, to make it simple, i like to buy graphic card for 5k. I ve heard more +ve reviews for 6670. But one thing is concerned, i ve Core i3 proccy with Mobo of DH61 model and 4GB DDR3 RAM. Also local PSU with 450 W. Here only im getting cornered. 6670 needs atleast 6GB ram and 600 W. So only im confused whether should i go for 6670 or GT 630. I know GT 630 was slower but it consumes less power. So give me a clear suggestion for this please.

    • Rick Sv

Any suggestions please, im in dilemma, over AMD/Nvidia under 5k with good fast performance card.

      • rk

save and buy a hd 7750 , you wont regret spending 2 k extra

      • Amaan

        ATI/AMD 5670 DDR5 or 6670HD

    • jozario

put an extra 1000 rs and buy 7750 they consume very low power.they really do justice for the price..

      • Rick Sv

Ok, does 7750 suits i3 with 4GB DDR3 RAM? and what about PCI slot? will it fit? because the pins decide to fit. If all goes good, then i will choose blindly!

        • rk

will fit bro :) all you have to check whether the MOBO supports pci-e cards.. thats it

  • koustav

Hey,Nice article I’m looking forward to buy the 6450 but I find in flipkart that it is present in a 2GB version also form sapphire, xfx and a couple others? So, should I go for the 1gb or 2gb and which one sapphire or xfx or others?

    • koustav

      *from

    • Amaan

1 gb is Enough.. As we said above, 2gb in lower end cards is a just a marketing gimmick. So go with 1gb as you won’t be able to use that much memory only. Happy Buying !

  • Rohit Walia

i m going to buy a gaming pc with i5 is any of these gfx run on i5 ?????

    • rk

obviously i5 is a good cpu for gaming

    • Amaan

Yes, any of the middle and high range cards would be good combination with your i5. Happy Gaming and keep visiting TA ! .

      • Rohit Walia

        well plan is changed i m going to buy i7 920 @amaanthinks:disqus

        • Amaan

          • Rohit Walia

gfx coming with i7 core :/

          • Amaan

It never comes unless you order. So ask the seller to tell the model number of teh graphics card.

      • Rohit Walia

i m really confused i have many options 1 i7 in_built pc but i won’t add any new technology in it and same will happen with i5 3rd option is buy a duo core 2 with 32 inches screen gfx steering wheel etc. but i have duo core 2 E7500 so i can modify my this pc please suggest me will i modify my this pc or i buy new and my uncle is saying i can give u a apple pc please tell me will games work in apple or not if games will not work on mac then please suggest me about pc @amaanthinks:disqus

  • alfred k

my pc spec is duel core E2220 2.4ghz 1gb graffics card 4350…i want to play games like tombraider , need for speed rivals , battlefield 4 , arkam origins , crysis3 etc in full graffics is jst changing my card to gtx660 enough…will gtx660 work in my pc…should i change ram also ??

    • Amaan

Yes if you have less than 4gb ram, then increas ram to at-least 2x2gb or 4x4gb (DUAL SLOT). Happy gaming !

      • alfred k

jst conferming so duel core 2.4ghz + gtx660 + 4gb ram is enough to play latest game in full setting rt??

        • Amaan

It depends on your monitor resolution too. But overall it should be fine.

          • alfred k

            my resolution is 1280×1084…

          • Amaan

Can you please tell me your CPU model specifically.?

          • alfred k

            ks-436/cpu e2220

          • Amaan

It would be a waste on this very old CPU. So I would advice you to Buy at-least 3rd Gen i3 and with 4x2gb ram on a NEW MOTHERBOARD. It will be perfect .

          • alfread k

changing processor nd motherbord and all is not possible…what is best i can do for my pc wid 15k….

          • Amaan

Take i3 3rd Gen anda mother board. And buy AMD 6670 then. Because buying a super powerful GPU and running on a very weak CPU will bottleneck your Graphics card’s performance. What I suggested above will be pretty much in your budget.

          • alfred k

but that means i have to change my ram and hard disc rt…so its gonna exceed my budget rt….

          • Amaan

You have to change RAM, as you will upgrade to newer motherboard. But won’t have to change HARD-DISK. Beside that if you planning on reselling those old parts, then it budget will extend more.

          • alfred k

how ll be it if i dn change pc and i buy 7770 + 2gb ram?? can i play crysis and tombraider in full graffics??

          • Amaan

Not possible. The CPU you mentioned will bottleneck your GRAPHICS CARD’s performance.

          • alfred k

so wh is best graphics card can i have…

          • Amaan

HD 6670 with a new CPU + Motherboard + at-least 4gb will make a balanced and full power utilizing rig in your budget,

          • alfred k

Thanks Amaan for your help. :D

          • alfred k

and will i have to change smps and cpu box if i buy gtx660??

  • Jayon k vinod

My pc spec is i3 2120 processor 4 gb ram and a local 600 watt psu my budget is 8k i want know whether the xfx version of 7750 is better.

    • Amaan

XFX is considered to be among the best AMD graphics card producers. Go ahead. !

  • Neo

Could you please provide the good graphic card manufacturer lot of people perfer that asus in india is having good service centers and reliability in the board level…what is your suggestion…?

    • Amaan

Yes, ASUS has good service centers and quite reliable. You can even try Sapphire and XFX.

  • shajjath

my pc spec is core i5, 6gb ram i wanna play games like nfs rivals, bf4 , bla..bla..on descent Frame Rates so which graphic card is better my budget is 5k

    • Amaan

HD 6670 is the way to go for you. Try 512mb DDR5 or 1GB DDR5 if possible in budget. Even 512mb will be enough for you as almost no game uses more than 512mb video memory.

Refrain from taking DDR3 version as they are relatively slower.

Happy Gaming and sorry for late reply !

210 is weak. Better buy at-least 4670 or 5670 if you have budget.

  • Eric

My Pc is dell inspiron 560s
my current graphic card=Ati Raedon HD4350
Wanted to buy – Ati Raedon HD5450

Query is which one is best for gaming and what’s the difference between these 4 cards-

    1)HIS AMD/ATI 5450 SILENCE 2GB DDR3 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card
    2)XFX AMD/ATI Radeon HD 5450 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card
    3)PowerColor AMD/ATI Radeon HD5450 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card
    4)Sapphire AMD/ATI Radeon HD 5450 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card

    • Amaan

After seeing your processor? I would recommend 5670 as 5450 is for HOME THEATRE PCs. Better save money and buy that instead of taking these slow ones.

XFX is considered the best, followed by Sapphire then HIS and PowerColor.

  • Pranav

    My rig:
    Intel i3 530 2.93 Ghz
    NVIDIA GeForce 210 1 GB DDR3 64 Bits
    6.0 GB DDR3 RAM
    Motherboard: Intel DH55TC

Cabinet: iBall Cabinet with SMPS-iBall Piano 108 Black Red
    Everything is on stock cooling.
My budget is Rs.8000 and i am looking forward to upgrade my GPU. I assume i will also have to upgrade the PSU.
    What do you recommend?
Also my GPU drivers crash if i set the clocks a lil’ higher than what i usually do. Is this because of my PSU?

    • Amaan

      Go with ATI 7770. :)

    • http://internetwarz.com Vipul Behl

You should consider buying Asus NVIDIA GTX650-E_2GD5 2GB DDR5
and if you are willing to make changes to your desktop to upgrade your gamming experience. You can upgrade your SMPS(PSU or the power supply unit) and you can also upgrade your RAM.

      • Pranjan Bhoyar

        thanks for the reply Vipul………..

if r going for r9 270x then i suggest u must lift ur budget up a bit and buy asus r9 280x DU II 3GB…
with the first combination of yours/ 6 cores are enough for r9 280x.. but still ur cpu will be a bottleneck on both combos. so consider a i5 3470k instead.
you can aso go for galaxy gtx 770 2gb if u r buying an intel processor.
      r9 280x<gtx 770

    • Amaan

2nd is better as it has better GPU. Advice: 2*8gb if it fits your budget.

i can’t decide which graphics card to buy…i think NVIDIA GPU is more powerful than(they have CUDA Technology,Adaptive Vertical Sync Technology,NVIDIA PhysX Technology,3D vision etc.)AMD.So pls help me………….my budget is under 6K.

    • Amaan

AMD 6670 is what I would suggest. CUDA and all won’t come handy unless you doing courses to learn them for designing.

PhsyX is over hyphed techonology and promoted by Nvdia in certain games.
